Skunk Stink Up Your Pet? Get Rid of the Smell Fast!
3 prevention pointers
BEWARE A FULL MOON!Skunks tend to come out on naturally well-lit nights and at twilight, so be extra-cautious on evening walks and carry a flashlight to spot sprayers.
BRING IN OUTDOOR BOWLS AT DUSK.In addition to open garbage cans or recycling bins, leftover dog or cat food is a skunk magnet.
CLEAR WOODPILES FROM YOUR PORCH.Also, close any low vents on your house at night. Skunks love to nest in debris piles (or your home if they get in)—and if they give birth there, they'll come back year after year.

At-home anti-odor remedy
In a plastic bucket, mix:
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
¼ cup baking soda
2 tsp gentle dish soap
For large pets, add 1 quart tepid tap water
Wearing gloves, wet your pet and work the mixture deep into the fur. For faces, use a washcloth, avoiding your pet's eyes and nose. Leave the suds on for 5 minutes or until the odor is gone. Then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Areas that are heavily sprayed may require a "rinse and repeat." Afterward, pour the used solution (and any extra) down the drain with running water.
WARNING: Never store the mixture in a closed container.
