Restoration and decoupage of the lampshade
Now comes into fashion to decorate the house with products made independently. Unique items, interior decorations, made in vintage style or decorated with photos, rags from grandma's chest will help to make the room unusual. The article is devoted to decorating an old plastic lampshade of a desk lamp using the decoupage technique. Often, before decorating something, you need to restore the surface. We will tell you how to strengthen and align the plastic lampshade for the subsequent decorative finishing. For the decoupage of this lamp shade I decided to take bright motifs. The choice fell on delicate tulips against a wooden ornament, greens and tenderness of flowers conquered me.In the color of gray shades of napkin I looked at the braid of cotton (lace) for processing the bottom of the lampshade. About the restoration of this item I would like to tell the interior in more detail. Before you start any decoration at all, you should understand what kind of object it is and what it is made of. I saw that the lampshade itself was plastic, almost transparent, and on top it was covered with a fabric that was cut out of the pattern and firmly glued to the surface. Trying to lighten the fabric with hydrogen peroxide did not lead to anythingOnly dust and dirt remained on the wool.It turned out that the drawings are printed on the fabric, the plastic itself does not have a picture. Also, by putting napkins and pieces of old wallpaper, I realized that the flowers shine through anyway. It became clear that the fabric should be removed. Whether it was just white or cream, you could try to make a decoupage directly on top of it. So, get rid of the old fabric. I found the place of the seam and carefully began to separate the fabric from the surface to which it was glued. Glue has lost its glueing properties from time to time, and the fabric was separated easily, but not everywhere. This should be done very carefully: in several places where there were cracksthe lampshade managed to burst.I was ready to complete the work and take the thing to her place, that is, to the dustbin, but interest in creativity overpowered So, it was necessary to restore the cracks.Last time I used instead of g White paint: the lampshade was covered with even paper of the same color. I started to shred plastic even now.And that's what I got when I turned on the lamp:All irregularities, cracks, patches were perfectly visible in the light. It became clear that the napkin could not hide them. It was necessary to do something. A few days of thinking led me to the fact that the paint needs to be washed off (well, that it was not waterproof). Under a stream of warm water, very carefully I sponge off all the paint, not excluding cracks. The patches all disappeared too. And the work started again. For a while I chose a putty (primer). The choice was stopped on the acrylate moisture-proof "filler" of the company "Collection": the manufacturer promises that it is ideal for decorative coatings, and what is a tissue motif, how not a decorative coating? After drying the first layer, I turned on the lamp!) began to apply the primer thicker and bolder, with broad strokes, trying to make sure that the light was transmitted uniformly. After the surface dries, it can be sanded and it will be ready for further work. After the main part has dried, you can add paste to the places where points, cracks or other defects are visible. This is convenient to do with cardboard, using it as a spatula. Leave to dry again, or you can dry it with a hairdryer. This is how the lamp shade looks after applying the “putty” and grinding the surface:
Restoration of the lampshade for decoupageOnce I have already done restoration and decoupage of the shade, then the product came to me with much less flaws, than now. In addition, the dark color of the selected motive hid all the irregularities of the light. But the lamp shade is an object that lets light through by definition. Recently, a table lamp came into my hands. The lampshade had clear drawings, floral ornaments. The drawing of the owners managed to get bored, and plus it had defects: lines from a ballpoint pen, drawn by a child. Upon closer inspection, it became noticeable that plastic burst in places.
Removing the old coatingThe foot of the lamp is white so that paint does not get on it, we will close it with newspapers.
Restoration, work with cracksAs before, I started the restoration from the inside (gluing small patches) and from the front (gluing white napkins) .
I continued the experiments on restoration, all of which were carried out with the lamp turned on, in order to assess the degree of transparency. Cracks from the inside and the front side (if not concave) were sealed with several layers of adhesive tape (cut into small squares and glued, trying to avoid bubbles).Second step was the first layer of primer on the lamp.Cracks first large cracks, then began to apply the composition to the entire surface. And now the trouble: exactly she went to bed only here and there, in some places thicker, in some - light was missing. I did not despair, put the paste and left to dry for a couple of hours. After this time, I tried sanding the surface with sandpaper No. 60 and found that all the irregularities are very easy to smooth.
ColoringAfter priming, I simply paint the lampshade with gray paint. There is another little secret here: I tint (add color) the paint with an ordinary watercolor. Of course, I do not dilute it with water, but I add a piece of watercolor to the paint and mix it for a long time until the color becomes uniform.
Gentle lilies: decoupage of lampshadeHousewives who love and know how to make lovely things and interior objects with their own hands , it will be interesting to learn about such a method of decoration as decoupage. This design of any surface with the help of color motifs with three-layer napkins. Indeed, on serving napkins sometimes there are bright, beautiful drawings that one would like to transfer, for example, to a lamp shade. This table lamp will look good both in the bedroom and in the living room, and you can choose the motifs for decoupage according to the general interior of the room. In the previous part of the article we have already examined in detail the steps of preparing the surface for decoration. Let's summarize. Paint is not suitable as a primer, and restoration with white napkins is not suitable, as it shines through the plastic. We sealed the cracks from the inside out with transparent tape, and then put a putty (primer) on the surface, which was then polished for a long time with sandpaper No. 60.
Preparation of napkins and decoupageAfter how are you The exterior is dry and ready for decoration, you need to select and prepare napkins. The quality of the image greatly influences the final look of the item being made. Recommendations for choosing napkins: three-layer napkins are better than two-layer ones; choose motifs taking into account the fact that they need to be cut out, that is, without small details;the brighter the colors, the better, do not get very light and too dark napkins. Before you begin to decorate the lamp, separate the paint layer from the napkin, iron the folds inside out. After that, cut out the motives. Warning! You can cut motives first, then separate the layers and only then smooth them.Choose a convenient option for yourself. As an adhesive, dilute the wallpaper glue a little thinner than for pasting the walls. Consider the composition: attach the napkins to the lampshade, imagine the finished product. If a solution is found and the idea has appeared, you can proceed to decoupage. Apply glue with a wide brush to the place where there will be a motive. Then attach the motive with the colorful side up, trying to stick it in the middle, and then smooth the edges. If everything is done correctly, the napkin will itself go to bed smoothly, you will only need to slightly help her. This paper is very thin, and you need to treat it delicately. We can say that there is no room for error.
