How Conrad Anker conquered Everest
Conrad Anker is the pro-mountaineer who found the body of British climbing legend George Mallory near the summit of Everest in 2007. Famous for his love of technical climbing everywhere from Antarctica to the Himalayas, hes also the star of a new documentary about climbing Everest,The Wildest Dream. Here, he tells you what you need to get to and survive at the roof of the world.
How can you train for something so monumental?
Try hiking everyday with a 22-kilo backpack. This gets your shoulder muscles used to the weight youll carry with you.
Can the Everest experience ever be simulated?
Its about enduring extreme discomfort for the longest time. Youre hypoxic, cold, starved and above 7,000m, things start getting really desperate.
Is there a way you can avoid altitude sickness?
Take an altitude bump often. In the UK, you could hike up one of the Bens in Scotland several times for a week: the elevation change even at this low level can reduce altitude sickness in some cases.
What muscle groups should you focus on training for Everest?
Your quads, calves and back take the strain. This is why hiking with weight is perfect training; your upper body has relatively little to do on Everest.
What kind of foods do you rely on up there?
High octane. Divide the weight of food by the calories and take the highest scoring food I eat bars of congealed olive oil. It turns to paste and tastes great when youre high up.
Want to follow Conrad to the top?
We asked Conrad Anker and two-time Everest climber Adele Pennington what it would take to replicate each stage of the climb from Base Camp to the Summit using regular gym equipment.
