4 Ways to Fill Your Tank for Less
1. Learn to Coast
Take your foot off the gas sooner and glide to a halt at a stop sign or red light. You'll increase your vehicle's fuel economy, saving up to a dollar per gallon, says John Nielsen of AAA.
2. Roll Up Your Windows
"Driving over 40 mph with the windows down creates drag, which burns more gas," explains Roger Clark, senior manager at the General Motors Energy Center. Use the a/c.
3. Slow Down
"Every 10-mile increase in speed over 40 mph cuts your car's fuel efficiency by 4 miles per gallon," Clark says. That means doing 80 mph costs you an extra 16 miles per gallon.
4. Do a Cap Check
Gas evaporates quickly, and the gas cap slows this process, says Clark. If yours jiggles when you touch it, take your car to an auto mechanic to have the cap replaced.
